Consistency beats resolution
Shopify themes lay products out in a grid. If your images have mixed aspect ratios, the theme has to either crop them or pad them, and either way the grid stops lining up. One portrait photo among twenty squares is visible immediately, even to someone who could not tell you what an aspect ratio is.
This is the single highest-impact thing you can fix, and it has nothing to do with megapixels. Pick one shape, use it everywhere, and a store built from phone photos starts looking deliberate.
Square is the usual answer because it survives every theme layout and every collection grid.
The limits worth knowing
Uploads are capped at 20 megapixels and 20 MB per file. A modern phone photo is comfortably inside both, but a raw export from a DSLR can exceed the megapixel cap and get rejected with an unhelpful message.
For theme zoom to work, images need to exceed 800 × 800 px. Shopify’s own recommendation for product images is well above that.
Shopify converts and serves WebP automatically to browsers that support it, so you do not need to produce WebP yourself. Upload a good-quality JPEG and let the platform handle delivery.
What about file size for page speed?
Because Shopify re-encodes and serves responsive variants, obsessing over the byte size of your upload matters less than it does on a marketplace. What does matter is not uploading a 20 MB file where a 2 MB one carries the same visible detail — it slows down your own admin and your theme editor.
A quality setting in the low 80s is effectively indistinguishable from maximum on product photography and is a fraction of the size.
