Amazon image size requirements

Amazon is stricter than most marketplaces, and it enforces its rules automatically. A main image on an off-white background can be suppressed without a human ever looking at it — the listing simply stops showing. Here is what the requirements actually are, and how to hit them for a whole batch at once.

The white background rule is the one that bites

Amazon requires the main image to sit on pure white — RGB 255, 255, 255 exactly. Not off-white, not cream, not the very light grey that a phone camera produces when it meters a white sweep under warm light.

This matters more than the dimension rules because it is enforced by an automated check. A suppressed listing does not appear in search, and sellers routinely lose days working out why traffic vanished when nothing about the listing text changed.

If you photographed against a white wall or a white sheet, your background is almost certainly not 255,255,255. Setting the backdrop explicitly when you resize is the fix, and it costs nothing.

Dimensions and zoom

The longest side needs to be at least 1000 px for Amazon to enable its zoom feature, and Amazon recommends 1600 px or larger for the best zoom experience. Going well above the minimum is worth it: zoom is one of the few listing features that measurably affects conversion, and it costs nothing but file size.

Square images are the safe default. They fill Amazon’s grid consistently and avoid the letterboxing you get when a listing mixes aspect ratios.

The 85% rule and what belongs on the main image

The product should occupy at least 85% of the frame. Too much empty space around a product reads as a low-effort listing and wastes the thumbnail, which is the only thing most buyers ever see.

The main image must carry no text, no logos, no watermarks, no borders and no inset images. This catches people out constantly — a watermark that is fine on Etsy or Instagram will get an Amazon main image rejected. Secondary images are more permissive, and that is where lifestyle shots and callouts belong.

Doing a whole batch

The tool below is preset to Amazon’s recommended geometry with a pure white backdrop. Drop a folder of photos in, check the preview, and export the batch as a zip.

Everything runs in your browser. The images are never uploaded, which also means there is no queue, no file-size ceiling imposed by an upload form, and no account.

Common questions

Why was my Amazon listing image suppressed?

The most common cause is a main image whose background is not pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255). Off-white, cream and light grey backgrounds trigger an automated check. Other frequent causes are text, logos or watermarks on the main image, borders, and the product occupying less than 85% of the frame.

What is the best image size for Amazon?

Aim for a square image at least 1600 px on the longest side. The hard minimum for zoom to activate is 1000 px, but 1600 px or larger is what Amazon recommends, and zoom is worth having.

Can I put my logo or a watermark on Amazon product photos?

Not on the main image — it must be free of text, logos, watermarks, borders and inset images. Secondary images are more permissive and are the right place for branding, callouts and lifestyle shots.

Does resizing my images here upload them anywhere?

No. All processing happens in your browser using your device’s own processor. The images never leave your computer or phone, and there is no account or upload step.
