The 1 MB threshold nobody mentions
Etsy’s hard cap is 50 MB per image, but Etsy itself warns that files above roughly 1 MB often fail to finish uploading, particularly on a slower connection. The upload does not error cleanly — it stalls, or the photo appears to attach and then is not there.
This is the single most common Etsy photo complaint, and it is entirely avoidable. Compressing to under 1 MB while keeping the pixel dimensions high gets you both the zoom feature and a reliable upload.
The tool below can target a file size directly rather than making you guess at a quality percentage, which is the setting that actually corresponds to the problem.
Dimensions and zoom
Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side. Below that, listing zoom is disabled — and on Etsy, where a large share of listings are handmade or textured goods, zoom is doing more selling than it does on a marketplace full of boxed products.
Note that the requirement is on the shortest side, not the longest. A wide 2000 × 1200 photo does not qualify.
Convert to sRGB before uploading
Etsy expects sRGB. Photos taken on a recent iPhone are frequently in Display P3, a wider colour space, and when a wide-gamut file is rendered as if it were sRGB the colours shift — usually looking flatter and slightly duller than they did on your phone.
This is a real and frequently misdiagnosed problem: sellers conclude their photography is bad when the actual issue is a colour-profile mismatch. Re-encoding through this tool outputs sRGB.
The first photo does the work
Your first listing photo is the one that appears in Etsy search results. It is doing more for your shop than the other nine combined, and it is worth sizing and cropping deliberately rather than accepting whatever came off the camera first.
Common questions
Why do my Etsy photos fail to upload?
Usually file size. Although Etsy’s stated cap is 50 MB, Etsy warns that images above about 1 MB often fail to finish uploading on slower connections. Compressing to under 1 MB while keeping the pixel dimensions high fixes it.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
At least 2000 px on the shortest side — that is the threshold for listing zoom to work. Note it applies to the shortest side, so a wide photo needs to be larger overall.
Why do my photos look duller on Etsy than on my phone?
Most likely a colour space mismatch. Recent iPhones capture in Display P3, and when that wider gamut is displayed as sRGB the colours flatten. Converting to sRGB before uploading resolves it.
How many photos should an Etsy listing have?
Use as many slots as you can fill with genuinely different information — scale, texture, detail, and the item in use. The first photo matters most, because it is what appears in search results.
